In the little village of Juwafat al-Kafrayn, in the Dead Sea Valley, you will find Dar Al Shouneh. Here you can experience Jordanian hospitality at its best and interact with the local villagers who share their culture, traditions, foods and stories of the past.
The Dar al Shouneh restaurant is nestled within the Greening The Desert Project, on the 3rd floor of the main building. The carefully considered interior design oozes Jordanian charm. The upholstery, lighting and beautiful decorative touches all adds to the immersive cultural experiences that Dar Al Shouneh has to offer.
In our professional chefs kitchen, visitors can join our traditional cooking classes and learn first hand, from one of our local family cooks, how to make one of our most favourite local dishes. For those who want to sit back and relax you can enjoy a freshly prepared set Jordanian feast or order directly from the menu.
All of our food is sourced directly from our Permaculture Gardens on site or from sustainable local businesses and are always Organic where possible.
The secrets of Arabic coffee (Oahwah arabiyya) and Jordanian flatbread (shrak) making are also waiting to be shared by our local villagers. These are experiences not to be missed.
If visiting with family or friends you can also relax in one of our cozy seating areas and learn more about our traditional games which are deeply rooted in our culture. Al Qitar, Al Manqala and Al Seeja are some of our popular board games which we would love to teach you how to play.
Towards the end of the day why not enjoy a Shisha and admire the beautiful sunset from the restaurant balcony which offers sweeping view across the valley.
The entire facilities of the Dar Al Shouneh restaurant are also available to hire for private events/parties. Please contact us for more details.
The goal of this project was to transform local communities by enriching the regions tourism in a sustainable manner, with a strong focus on women, youth and farmers.
In partnership with The Greening The Desert Project, Dar Al Shouneh is able to demonstrate, through the teachings of Permaculture, how sustainable living and food production systems can empower local communities, provide resilience and sustainable economical growth, whilst nurturing the environment.
In 2007 The Greening The Desert Project was born. It’s objective was to demonstrate how a small site, with very poor soil could be transformed to grow a wide variety of food and sustainable living systems.
